[FONT= ]A possible interplanetary shock wave was detected by SOHO/CELIAS at 12:00 UT today, although the corresponding jump in the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude is unclear in the ACE data. The shock is probably associated with the full halo CME observed on the Sun on March 5. The southward IMF in the post-shock flow resulted in another intervals of K = 6 and K = 5 reported by NOAA. The solar wind speed in the post-shock flow reached 580 km/s. Due to this increase in the background solar wind speed, we update the prediction for the arrival time of the interplanetary counterpart of the full halo CME observed on March 7: we expect the ICME arrival around noon on March 8.

On March 8, 2012 at 8:37 PM (PST), an M6.3 solar flare has shot off from sunspot region 1429. This event comes on the shoulders of March 7th X5.4 flare which has not yet completed its impact on Earth's magnetic field.

The usual time frame from solar event to impact on Earth is between 48 and 72 hours depending on the magnitude of the flare. This means it will be sometime on March 9th to feel the impact of Mar. 7th's X5.4. Soon after (within hours) the impact of tonight's Mar.8th M6.3 flare will hit Earth's magnetic field.​

Catania sunspot group 65 (NOAA AR 1429) produced an M6.3 flare peaking at 03:53 UT around N15W03. SDO/AIA data show the associated coronal dimmings, EIT wave and a post-eruption arcade, indicating the eruption of a CME.

The CME was detected in the STEREO SECCHI/COR and LASCO data and seems to be Earth-directed.

An estimation of the arrival time will be provided in a later alert. The Earth is currently inside the
post-shock solar wind flow associated with the halo CME on March 7, perhaps inside the ICME.

The solar wind speed is around 650 km/s and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude is around 19 nT.

The IMFis directed predominantly southward since around midnight. This resulted
in K = 6 reported by NOAA this morning.

The SEP event is still going on, although the proton flux is decreasing and the flux at energies above 100 MeV went below the 10 pfu event threshold.

HUGE SUNSPOT: Active sunspot AR1429 continues to grow. It is now more than seven times wider than Earth, which makes it an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. In fact, yesterday, David Tremblay of Alto, New Mexico, saw it using no telescope at all. All he needed was a dust storm:

"The dust blowing from Tularosa Basin was so dense, we could observe the sun with the naked eye--and there was sunspot AR1429. Wow!" says Tremblay.​

The behemoth spot has unleashed four strong flares since it emerged on March 2nd, including the X5-class eruption of March 7th. More could be in the offing. The active region has a "beta-gamma-delta" class magnetic field that harbors energy for additional X-class eruptions. Solar flare alerts: text, phone.


CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of an X-class solar flare today from big sunspot AR1429. The sunspot is almost directly facing Earth, so any such eruptions should be geoeffective.
